Re Purpose

DIY

So first let me say I do not have TV. What the heck right? You know what sucks about not having TV? Not having HGTV… and lately people have been comparing me and my hubby to Fixer Uppers. So of course I you tubed away and found the best freaggin couple ever!!! Naturally after watching them I got a farmhouse vibe!

I have had this bare spot next to my side door and its been driving me nuts! It’s a small spot too and I figured why not a shelf for the keys. I went venturing and found an adorable larger scale mirror. Antiqued farmhouse style. $70.. no thank you!

I was on a mission and went to the thrift store and found this small wall shelf.

In case you were wondering about my mess, I wasn’t quite sure what this shelf was going to look like yet, I was gathering my ideas 🙂

I really wanted to find an old window or something to put under it but couldn’t find one. I went home and dug out an old frame that I’ve always loved the style of but for some reason I hate multi picture frames.

IMG_4357

The frame was too long for what I wanted so I cut it down. Then painted the thrift store shelf white, fossil, white then some glaze. I tried to match the frame. It didn’t happen very well but I thought it ended up looking pretty good together. Then I attached them together with some simple brackets.

But…… my favorite part was the glass makeover! I had some “Looking Glass” spray paint. This stuff is awesome. I followed the directions, but before I did that I sprayed a light mist of vinegar. I heard this helped in making it look like mercury glass! When I was done with the 5th light coat I let it dry then wiped it off for the antique look.

The Budget Room

The McAffrey Home

Alright, alright, alright… this room was originally labeled “the great room” but to me it has been hassle, hassle, hassle. Filled with uh oh’s and oops, this room might be my biggest downfall with the new/ old house. BUT I want to share it anyway!

lr5

First of all we absolutely loved this room when we bought the house and there was nothing in it! We could see the potential all 500 square feet of it! A room this size, I thought obviously we divide it up.. right? Nope that has not worked out so far. Mostly because I am a girl with a budget. If only I had a big pay day this room would be 10 times better. But even in that case would I want to splurge with 2 MESSY small kids????

I think it is very important for my kids to have fun and play with each other even if it means wrestling and rough housing. We want our baby girl to be one tough chick, her bubba can make that happen! I know they are kids and that they will bend the rules because what child who has been on this earth less than 4 years wouldn’t? They are learning and that’s why I don’t want to spend any money on our living room until they know for sure this is mommy’s new chesterfield and we CANNOT mess it up! That won’t be for another 10 years though!

Ok so on with the point we decided no dividing and just use every ounce of space we could. My husband talked me into this sofa. It was my dad’s and I didn’t want it because I wanted new at the time (before my clarity set in). But I let him talk me into it and of course it’s perfect for our little mess makers! I really hate when my husband is right when it comes to design, which is often. It is so comfy and all you have to do is wipe their sticky finger prints off! The coffee table was originally our breakfast table at our first home we didn’t have a space for it at the new house so we cut the legs down to make a coffee table! I’m still trying to find the perfect decor for the table, but it’s really hard when you’ve got a Willa living in your house.

lr6

As for the chairs (oh my God, so comfy) two people could curl up in these and we often do! They were a Craig’s list find and well worth the $90 apiece! And wouldn’t you know it, I had them almost a year before I realized the cushions have zippers for easy cleaning. I’m fairly ditsy at times. I also added some garage sale finds, like this $5 ottoman.

lr4

We added the shelves (ikea) and I love my quirky decor I’ve collected over the years, so the shelves are filled with it!

lr1 lr3 lr2

I’ve got a piano spot, where the piano our Mimi and Grampy so graciously gave us. Above more quirkiness! The shelf was built by the anxious momma who needed a shelf, yours truly. I found a 1 X 6 in the garage that was just the right length. I found a leather belt I kind of liked, but obviously wanted to decorate more. I cut it in half and used the straps to hold the shelf up with a screw each. The shelf has thrift frames with family photos and pages from my favorite catalogs and some nic knacks. Below is a garage sale rug $10 that I dyed blue with some Rit!

lr12 lr13

I’m working on a kid’s corner now and trying to convince my husband to hang my prized mirror over the sofa! It’s a huge metal mirror that is soo heavy. It’s incredible and a gift from our awesome friend Kline! The living room is far from what I want right now but it works!

Oh and there is a before!

Love before and after’s! We pulled up the carpet, stained the floors, painted the walls, sanded that awful maple paneling, added built-ins next to the fireplace and hung some shelves!

Bromley Kate's Nursery

Bromley’s Nursery….

I was overjoyed last February when we cut into a cake to find a pink center indicating that we were expecting a precious baby girl! So naturally, I couldn’t wait to start designing her nursery! I definitely had some help. Thankfully my mom is a fabulous interior designer and couldn’t wait to help design her first grand child’s nursery!

Step 1: We began by choosing a color palette:

Rocker:Window:Changing Table

Soft Pink: Behr – Peach Cloud * Coral: Behr – Fruit Shake * Gold: Accessories/Monogram/Furniture/Fabrics

Step 2: The most important piece of furniture in the room – The Crib

Crib:Mono:Mobile

Belle Upholstered Crib- Restoration Hardware Baby & Child

Step 3: Custom Bedding

Fabrics were chosen from fabric books provided by a local upholstery shop. I wanted to be sure to incorporate a variety of prints that complemented each other. For example, the stripe and polka dot fabrics can be incorporated with different colors as our baby girl grows and can mature with her.

Step 4: The Window

I had fallen in love with this fabric that I found at Hobby Lobby. I loved how the metallic floral print added a little shine and dressed the room up a bit. The fabric also comes in a gold metallic with a lighter tweed like fabric backing.

Step 5: It’s all in the details….

The last step in putting together the nursery was to find little things that made her little room feel cozy and a place where she would want to play and spend time as she grows. After all it is the little things in life that worth remembering and cherishing.

Designing a nursery is truly a labor of love. It is part of the “nesting” process that every mom experiences at some point during their pregnancy. This room is truly the coziest and most peaceful room in our home. My hope is that Bromley Kate will enjoy her little room as much as I do!

Alexis’s Favorite Breakfast

recipes

These Authentic Swedish Pancakes (I like to call them Crepes) are actually surprisingly easy and are absolutely delicious! These used to be my husbands “special day” breakfast that he would make me on my birthday and Valentines, but then he taught me!!! So I make them pretty often and thought I would share them with you!

First and foremost they came from a very special woman named Muriel Fields AKA Mimi. She is someone I am honored to call my grandmother! I married her grandson and in return she gave me the sweetest recipe book a girl could ask for with all the family fav’s!

crepe4

Here are the ingredients

  •  1 Cup flour (rounded top for a little more than 1 cup)
  •  1 T Sugar
  •  1 Tsp Salt
  •  1 1/2 Cup milk
  •  3 Eggs

Optional

  •  Berries
  •  Yogurt or Cottage cheese
  •  Fruit

Directions

  • Mix the dry ingredients first, then add milk and eggs
  • Whisk well
  • Heat non stick skillet on medium heat
  • Spread some butter to further prevent sticking & for an extra dash of flavor
  • Pour for one medium to large crepe (should be thin)
  • Watch for bubbles around the edges and then flip (this requires skill)
  • Let cook and remove

crepe2

I like mine browned, they are scrumptious! When removing and ready to serve keep crepe open like a pancake and spread a line down the middle with yogurt or whatever filling your heart desires. I like to pour a thin line of yogurt and add blueberries, strawberries and cinnamon apple shavings! Bring one side of the crepe to the middle, then bring the other side over kind of like a burrito. I also like to add more fruit to the top to create my perfect little breakfast art piece!

crepe5

NOTE: This recipe makes about 7 good size crepes, if doubling the recipe only use 5 eggs

You could also make these for lunch! I love shredded chicken crepes with a homemade mushroom sauce!

When I go to restaurants and happen to see crepes I always read up on the ingredients so I can make them at home!

About Jori

About Us

Hi, my name is Jori. And no it isn’t short for anything… (I get asked this question a lot!)

I have been married to my best friend and the love of my life for 3 years. We met in high school and started dating in 2006 and have been together ever since! He is a brilliant engineer and wonderful provider for our family. A few words to describe him would be: dedicated, motivated, supportive, kind & patient. It also doesn’t hurt to mention that he is quite handsome… If i do say so myself.

IMG_0001

In June of 2014 we became a family of 3. Bromley Kate Speer, our beautiful baby girl, has overwhelmed us with the joy and love she has brought into our lives. She is growing too fast and I catch myself everyday telling her to “stay little.” I hope that she is brilliant and kind like her daddy and learns to love Jesus with her whole heart.

IMG_3221 copy

As for me, I was born into a family of entrepreneurs, so it is no surprise that I am constantly trying to mold ordinary things in to something extraordinary. I stepped away from the insurance business in 2013 to pursue a career in real estate and interior design. I believe it is essential in life to love what you do and do what you love. My hope is that this blog will be a source of knowledge and inspiration. I hope that you will join me on this journey!
Sincerely,

Jori

About Alexis

About Us

My name is Alexis. I have been married to a near perfect man who has spoiled me rotten for 7 years! He is a firefighter in Amarillo, Texas (I like to think of him as an administration clerk… you know… because that’s not dangerous). He absolutely loves his career which makes me happy and so very proud to be the wife of someone so brave and courageous.  He is quite the handyman which is perfect for me because I’m quite the DIY’er!  ajhomewj

We have two magnificent children! Lenox Van is my baby boy (going on 4) he is the sweetest, most intelligent little being. He melts my heart and he knows it! What 3-year-old tells his mother on a daily basis “Momma, I love you and you’re beautiful.”  Mine! I’m so thankful for him! I can’t beleive I get to be his mother! ajhomelen

Then there is Wilem Lane, we like to call her Willa. She is my baby girl, far beyond beautiful.  She is going to be 2 in June. She is my little dancer and that girl has some rhythm! She loves to dance, sing and make you laugh! She is so loving and sweet … until she’s not and then she is one sneaky little girl!!ajhomew

As for me, I’ve always loved art! My major in college was art, but the real desire came when we moved into our first home in 2008. This house was in a historic yet run down part of town.  My house was the cutest 1344 sq ft home with high ceilings, 10 inch base boards, original wood floors and loads of charm. It was the perfect canvas! ajhomewilI have been in the insurance business for nearly 7 years and would not call that my career. My dream is to do everything! I love fashion, art, homes, design and just love to create! This past year I have ventured into real estate hoping it will lead me to interior design, remodel’s and flips! I know now that I am irrevocably in love with design! I’m thrilled that you can join me on the chase for my dreams!

Sincerely,

Alexis McAffrey
